Let's be honest, it wasn't that hard to break a freaking window or climb a gate in the outlast. I feel torn every time I get to the part where Jessica begs you to stay but you have to turn your back on her.Īs for the setting, I find the fact of being outside much scarier than trapped in a asylum. I cared about the characters, I can't imagine going through so much to save my wife, and obviously the flashbacks of the school are simply awful. As the story goes we get to learn more but they also keeps you guessing on so many things you have to find out by yourself. It got straight in your face action and chase scenes but also a very complex script with a lot of depth in the story. It's obviously scary but it's also a total mindfuck.

I'm a massive horror movie fan and Outlast 2 just has all the qualities I love in these kind of movies. And to be honest I love it that much because I tend to judge it more like a movie rather than a video game. Outlast 2 is my favorite out of the 3, and by far. I think because of the chase pressure and open (ish) murky levels it's easier to disregard the notes and/or forget the recordings, so on a first pass it's more of a "WHO ARE YOU!? STOP CHASING ME! WHY ARE YOU SO TALL!? WHY ARE THESE ONES COVERED IN MUD? HOLY SHIT WHY ARE YOU NAKED!?" marathon of uncomfortable confusion, but as you take the time to read and review all of the details the story becomes exponentially better.īoth games are fantastic and I have nothing but love for Outlast/Whistleblower, but the feuding cult sects, the subtle lighting cues and true darkness, technical chases, that thwaaaang sound effect I adore, and especially Marta just being her terrifying badass self have me pretty thoroughly converted. I've spent a lot more time in Temple Gate than Mount Massive, and maybe it's the tower emissions talking (or Marta's delicate embrace) but I genuinely prefer 2 now. I didn't enjoy Outlast 2 as much on the first go, but oh man did going for 100% change my tune. Thought some people here might see where I’m coming from. Kind of makes me sad to see it be the least favored by Outlast fans.

Outlast 2 got under my skin the most, and the most consistently, out of the three. I was playing in a particular state of panic during that part, that I hadn’t felt in the last two games, for about 20 undivided minutes, trying to find an escape route. The village people are effectively intimidating, I have to emphasize the part when you escape a shack through a crawl space under the floorboards and about 15 of those fuckers are just steadily chasing you around the open.

The chase scenes had my heart pounding more than the chases in 1 and Whistleblower combined (both of which I still definitely enjoy, don’t get me wrong!)The atmosphere of the deserted villages, the dilapidated shacks and barns, the claustrophobia of being in the pit of a canyon surrounded by high walls of stone, it’s crazy how despite there being more a sense of free roam, it feels so much more claustrophobic and inescapable than the other two games. There are so many moments even upon replay that I was playing in a state of absolute fear not knowing where to go, due to it being a little more open for running around and finding your way than the previous two.

I genuinely think it’s the most adrenaline inducing and terrifying of the three. Out of the three, 2 is the Outlast game I’ve seen receive the most negative comments about.
